約10年前に綿栽培から有機栽培にくら替えしたロブさん。両親の営む農場で、仕事を手伝いながら育ったといいます。現在、コンダマイン川近くの約200ヘクタールの農地をシェアファーマーとともに所有。キアラ向けに、キビ、小麦、ソルガム、ひよこ豆、カムットなどの作物を栽培しています。 特に関心を寄せているのが、有機農家が利用できそうな新技術の研究。新たな手法により、化学肥料や、雑草を駆除するための化学薬品の散布といった従来の農業手法が不要になるといいます。 ロブさんによると、多くの農家が何年もの間、農薬を散布してきた結果、除草剤の効かない除草剤抵抗性雑草が出現しているとのこと。その結果、多くの農家は最近、より有機的な方法によって雑草駆除や土壌の健康状態を管理しているそうです。 欧州連合や米国など、他の先進国の農家とは異なり、オーストラリアの農家は、農業収入を補うための国家補助金を毎年受給することはできません。ロブさんは、柵張りや収穫の仕事、トラック運転手をして農業収入を補っています。ですから「二足以上のわらじを履く」人だということが言えます。 農場から出荷された穀物が、製粉所に到着後、どのような工程を踏むかについては 動画による製粉所バーチャルツアーをご覧ください。 Read more
